According to the newly-revealed cast list for American Horror Storiesseason 2, episode 2, familiar faces are returning alongside some new ones. Spurred by the success of the 10 seasons and counting of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's American Horror Story, a spinoff series was ordered on FX last year. Shrinking the season-long anthology nature of AHS, American Horror Stories tells a separate ghastly tale every episode.
While largely standalone, American Horror Stories has made several overt connections to the flagship series. Season 1 tied back to American Horror Story's Murder Housefor 3 out of its 7 episodes, and brought back characters like Dylan McDermott's Dr. Ben Harmon. The callbacks, as well as the entirety of season 1 itself, were met with mixed reviews. American Horror Stories season 2 has continued the trend of tying into past seasons of AHS, as episode 1, «Dollhouse,» revealed itself to be a stealth origin story for Denis O'Hare's mute butler Spalding from American Horror Story: Coven. Despite relying on returning to old storylines, season 2 seems to be fairing better critically.
