AMD's CEO, Lisa Su, has highlighted the importance of AI in progressing toward next-gen chip designs and the challenges it brings.
At the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, Lisu emphasized the role & importance of AI in the future. AMD's CEO noted that AI is the way for chip designs, especially for testing and verification. The CEO has already cited AI as its number one strategic priority moving forward.
For those who are unaware, AI has a wide range of applications in chip designing which has aided the industry to a great extent. However, progressing in the AI era requires engineers to be equipped with modern knowledge of hardware, software, and algorithms. NVIDIA already utilizes its own AI GPUs in the development of current and upcoming chips and AMD is planning to go a very similar route.
AI techniques like machine learning and deep learning can optimize the chip design process. By analyzing vast amounts of data and running simulations, AI algorithms can identify patterns and generate optimized designs that meet specific performance requirements. Moreover, it also identifies flaws in a product, removing the possibility of any disruptions within the final product.
AI also extends to creating better chip design as it streamlines the semiconductor design process by using existing designs as a learning source and creating layouts that follow design guidelines while optimizing for factors like power consumption, signal integrity, and area utilization. One prominent example of this application is the release of Synopsys.ai, which has provided the capabilities of AI to engineers, making every development stage much easier and more efficient.
