Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be set thousands of years before Peter Jackson’s beloved The Lord of the Rings film series, depicting the Second Age of Middle-earth and likely showing numerous major battles. Rings of Power will feature the island kingdom of Númenor, the forging of the titular rings of power, and additional backstory for iconic Lord of the Rings characters, such as Elrond, Isildur, and Galadriel. Two major conflicts, the War of the Elves and Sauron and the War of the Last Alliance, took place in Middle-earth’s second age, and with them are numerous major battles that the upcoming series could depict.
In the prologue to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the final battle of the War of the Last Alliance, the Siege of Barad-dûr, is shown, with Isildur defeating Sauron and destroying his physical form, but failing to overcome the allure of power and destroy the One Ring. Isildur’s history, Sauron’s rise to power (and plot to control Middle-earth through the rings of power), and the Great Rings themselves (aside from the One Ring) are alluded to in the Lord of the Rings films, but Rings of Power will show them, adapting elements of J. R. R. Tolkien’s written works for the first time.
