One of the most pivotal scenes from Hannibal's second season, one that further explores the relationship between the show's titular character and FBI profiler Will Graham, was actually inspired by James Cameron's Avatar. The psychological thriller, developed by Bryan Fuller and based on the popular Thomas Harris novels, premiered on NBC in 2013, where it aired for three seasons. The series began by introducing audiences to Will Graham, an agent recruited to assist with an investigation, who meets and forms a dangerous bond with the secret cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lector. The second season of Hannibal received praise for its deft storytelling, and the series as a whole maintained critical acclaim throughout its run, building a cult following in the process. It starred Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy as Hannibal and Will, respectively, and featured Caroline Dhavernas, Laurence Fishburne, and Gillian Anderson, among others.
Throughout the show's run, audiences got to witness the relationship between Hannibal and Will evolve. Season three saw the two characters develop more of an unconfirmed romance and included a number of scenes alluding to that potential plot. Unfortunately, that subplot was never properly explored. The series was cancelled in 2015, with NBC blaming low viewership. Still, Hannibal did manage to make it clear which direction the story would head in if given a renewal, with romantic Hannibal and Will moments scattered throughout the show. In one particular instance, the season 2 finale demonstrated how tumultuous the pair's feelings were for each other when an emotional Hannibal stabs Will after he ruins their plans of running away together, uttering "I let you know me — see me."
