Netflix has reportedly decided not to order a second season of its action horror series based on Resident Evil.
According to Deadline, the decision to cancel the show a month and a half after its release, was likely due to its disappointing viewing performance relative to cost.
Resident Evil debuted on the streaming service in July and soon after received terrible audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes, which were among the lowest for any Netflix video game adaptation.
The show features “the Wesker kids” as they uncover secrets inside of New Raccoon City. Albert Wesker is one of the primary antagonists in the Resident Evil games.
At the time of release, Resident Evil had a 22% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to its 53% critical score. It’s worth noting that anyone can vote as part of the audience score, and no verification of actually watching the show is required.
User reviews for Resident Evil were also incredibly negative. User Jhonatan V said, “Serial disaster, has nothing to do with Resident Evil”.
Another 2-star review from user Ken C wrote, “it is entertaining enough if you don’t pay attention to it. Interesting spin at the RE storyline”.
A 3-star review, by self-described “Resident Evil diehard apologist and enjoyer” Ponpo C called it, “one of the weirdest pieces of media [I’ve] ever seen”.
