Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is giving the public an early look at Project Cambria, a VR headset he says could one day replace the laptop.
On Thursday, Zuckerberg posted(Opens in a new window) a video of himself trying out the headset and showing off some of the features. The big takeaway is that Project Cambria can function a lot like Microsoft’s HoloLens mixed reality headset by projecting 3D digital images over everything you see in the real world.
Project Cambria can achieve this thanks to the product’s “passthrough” feature. This allows the wearer to see their real-world surroundings while the device is still over their face. The headset’s exterior cameras will instead capture video around the wearer and beam it through the device's displays.
You can already find the passthrough feature in Meta’s Oculus Quest headsets. But the video quality can be warped and limited to black and white. However, Project Cambria promises to take the technology to the next level by offering a “full color passthrough” for a higher image quality.
Zuckerberg’s video offers a preview of what users can expect from the full color passthrough. In addition, he showed that Project Cambria can power augmented reality applications during the passthrough mode.
“You’re looking at an experience called The World Beyond,” he said. “It uses our Presence Platform to blend the physical and virtual worlds together.”
The video goes on to show Zuckerberg playing with a 3D animated rabbit in an office space. The clip then demos how the full color passthrough could be used for work and exercise purposes.
“Imagine being able to pull up your perfect workstation with as many screens as you want or anywhere you go,” Zuckerberg said. “Or working out with a virtual
