Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist showrunner Austin Winsberg wants to make more holiday special movies. The NBC musical comedy-drama series saw Jane Levy as Zoey Clarke, a software developer who gains the ability to hear people's internal thoughts as songs. Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist ran for two seasons on NBC to moderate success, but in 2021 the network cancelled the show. The series was subsequently shopped elsewhere before Roku picked it up for a two-hour holiday film called Zoey's Extraordinary Christmas, which came out last December. The film was well-received and nabbed two Emmy nominations.
In an interview with Variety, Winsberg reveals his hopes to make more holiday films for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. The showrunner has multiple ideas for continuing Zoey's story, and he would love to make new music for the show's potential holiday installments. Read what he said below.
“ [I have] a million stories left to tell in the ‘Zoey’s’ universe. There’s an endless amount of love songs that could work for ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Valentine’s Day,’ a bunch of spooky songs we could use for ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Halloween.’ If someone wants to make a film about Arbor Day, I’m happy to think of songs about trees and nature!”

Although Winsberg is clearly interested in making more holiday films, it's not a sure thing that his ideas would bear fruit. Any continuation of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist beyond the Roku wrap-up movie could entail a rights issue with NBC Universal. Nevertheless, if an agreement is reached, it will be interesting to see Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist deliver more lovely ballads and holiday anthems.
