After releasing a game so bad there was no new entry last year, WWE 2K22 is a major return to form.
It’s no secret fans were left disappointed by WWE 2K20 (to say the least), as they saw a series in decline and one that struggled to deal with the switch from long-time Japanese developer Yuke’s to US team Visual Concepts.
It ended up being an imperfect storm leading to a year long break, as publisher 2K decided to focus their efforts on this year’s edition instead.
Like The Undertaker ominously sitting up on the canvas to turn the momentum round, it feels like WWE 2K22 really does turn a corner – It Hits Different isn’t just a cute tagline.
The new game feels entirely different, with new controls now centred on combos and choices of light, heavy, and grapple attacks, with the reversal system getting a huge overhaul to make the matches free-flowing and thrilling from bell to bell.
Suddenly, it all seems like fun again, even for long-time players having to get to grips with a fresh way of playing, that takes more inspiration from fast-paced arcade fighters than a more plodding simulation style.
Thankfully, WWE superstar and trainer Drew Gulak is on hand when you load up the game to take you to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, which makes for a smart tutorial to get everyone up to speed regardless of their experience level.
Before we get any further, we should give a nod to the graphics – because they’re absolutely stunning. The wrestlers themselves look fantastic, with the arenas and crowds feeling more lifelike, and the action befitting of Raw and SmackDown every week.
That’s not much use if it’s all sizzle and no steak, but WWE 2K22 manages to deliver in a big way.
