It had to change its name, but WordHurdle is what a proper Wordle sequel would look like.
There are already several harder variations of Wordle out there, with some of the more popular ones, such as Quordle and Octordle, having you solve multiple puzzles at the same time.
Along with almost every other Wordle clone, they still follow the same basic set-up of guessing a five-letter word. It seems only one ever considered the obvious next step for Wordle: guessing a six-letter word.
Titled WordHurdle, the new game is exactly what you’d expect, although you have six tries to guess the word instead of five. Also, for whatever reason, correct letters are highlighted in blue instead of green.
The game’s Twitter account claims the game to be ‘much harder, more fun!’ than regular Wordle and it offers a new puzzle every 12 hours, as opposed to Wordle’s one puzzle per day.
The game was originally called Wordle 2 but it changed its name, no doubt to avoid being sued by The New York Times and suffering the same fate as the Wordle Archive.
Honestly, it’s the kind of idea you’d think The New York Times would have already jumped on. In fact, it’s kind of surprising that The New York Times hasn’t been making new, official alternatives of its own considering how many people have flocked to the various clones.
WordHurdle seems like the perfect compromise for those that have been finding regular Wordle too easy, but don’t want anything as taxing as Quordle and Octordle – where the challenge comes from finding multiple different answers at once.
