WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Bel-Air episode 7!
After becoming closer and more honest in Bel-Air season 1, Will still lies to his love interest Lisa about why he came to California, which connects back to his relationship with the Banks family. Bel-Air’s premiere saw Will arrested after pulling a gun in a fight with a known gangster, landing Will in jail and jeopardizing his future. Uncle Phil used his connections and influence to get Will out of holding and wipe the incident from his record, with Will’s mom immediately sending him to live with the Banks family. When Will arrived at Bel-Air, the first conversation he had with Uncle Phil ended in him requesting that Will tell people he was in town for “education” and “better opportunities."
While Phil wanting to hide Will’s legal troubles primarily seemed to be based on his campaign for District Attorney, Bel-Air later suggested that Phil could face legal consequences himself if the circumstances of him getting Will out of jail were exposed. Until Tray visited in Bel-Air episode 5 and let Will’s legal troubles slip to Carlton, nobody but Viv and Phil knew the true reason for Will staying with the Banks family. The Bel-Air characters still maintain that Will is staying with them for better education, but Lisa clearly had her doubts when she asked Will about it in episode 7.
