Despite some anticipation for the sequel, MGM recently scrapped Tomb Raider 2 and a new report reveals the reasons why the film was cut short. The movie was to be a follow-up to the 2018 reboot based on Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics' adventure video game franchise of the same name, primarily its own 2013 reboot delivering a gritty and mature take on the property. Tomb Raider centered on Lara Croft, daughter of archaeologist Lord Richard Croft, who sets out to solve the mystery of his disappearance, taking her to an isolated island with mercenaries from the shadowy organization Trinity, who potentially have answers about her father.
Alicia Vikander led the cast of Tomb Raider as Lara alongside Dominic West as Richard, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, Kristin Scott Thomas and Nick Frost. Helmed by Roar Uthaug on a script from Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, which was based on a story treatment from the former and Evan Daugherty, the film scored largely mixed reviews from critics for its straightforward plot, though the action sequences, recapturing of the serious tone from 2013's Tomb Raider and Vikander's performance garnered generally favorable reactions. Though falling just short of its $275 million break-even point with a $274 million haul, MGM had been making headway on a sequel until this past week brought word that Tomb Raider 2 was scrapped and now word is coming out about why it isn't moving forward.
