Apex Legends Season 12 is finally out in the wild. After weeks of checking leaks and re-reading the patch notes, we’ve got a new season on our hands. Crypto mains are a little happier, Caustic mains a little more toxic, and Bangalore mains have a viable character to play in Mad Maggie. At least the new girl actually has a tactical ability that’s not completely mitigated by five other Legends.
Something that went a little under the radar, however, was Control mode. Respawn has been pushing it hard, advertising at the forefront of most trailers and tying the LTM in with the game’s latest lore advancements. However, players abandoned Arenas (remember that?) quickly after its release, so you can be forgiven for overlooking another new mode being added to the game.

But Control is actually good. I know my fellow features editor Eric Switzer already said this, but I want to reiterate that it’s truly great fun. Not ‘ah I’ll play a round to warm-up for the main event’ good as I initially intended it to be, more like ‘oh shit it’s 1am and I’m still dropping into Barometer’ good. I was going to check out the new changes to Olympus, I really was - I just got completely and utterly sucked into Control.
Now I’m not going to try to overintellectualise why it’s so good, I’m just going to explain what keeps me dropping in for more. Immediately respawning at your base is great - it means you aren’t punished if your teammates decide to w-key into the action at every opportunity. Plus, you have six other teammates, some of whom might actually try to play the objectives.
