When a player first begins Animal Crossing: New Horizons the game will automatically suggest a hemisphere based on the player’s region, but there are perks to choosing an opposite one instead. Choosing the opposite hemisphere might be worth it for many, especially those who play socially with others. Signing up for the Nook Inc. Deserted Island Getaway Package sends the player to an island that will become their virtual home, and by default the seasons roughly synch with real-world weather changes. Changing weather impacts more than aesthetics in Animal Crossing, as the season also determines which fish and bugs are available, whether season-specific items like snowflakes and summer shells can be obtained, and more. For the many players who play with their friends and visit each other’s islands, having the opposite hemisphere allows more opportunities for collecting.
The update that added Kapp’n boat tours to Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers a way around the season limits, but they can often disappoint. Players could luck out and stumble open an island with a different season from their home island. The odds of finding a specific season-specific bug or fish during such trips are slim, however, given the small sizes of these islands. Combined with the unpredictable nature of the tours, the cost in Nook Miles, and the once per day limit, having an opposite hemisphere island friend provides a more reliable method.
