A new report details which U.S. airports offer the fastest free Wi-Fi and the good news is that the technology has continued to improve over the last few years even though fewer people have been flying. With pandemic-related travel restrictions finally easing, some visits to the airport are now more likely, and knowing which airports offer the best bandwidth can help to stay connected when venturing further from home and the office.
5G is also available in some airports but C-Band is restricted in some cases since there is the potential that its signal could interfere with the altimeters used in some aircraft. Rather than take that risk, the carriers have agreed to restrict 5G C-Band signals near some airports. The good news is that Wi-Fi is still available in many airports and the speed is quite good. A company called Ookla specializes in testing internet bandwidth and they are the maker of the popular SpeedTest app which allows collecting vast amounts of data to facilitate broad analysis of local and global internet connectivity.

A recent report from Ookla shared test results from airports around the world, highlighting those with the most impressive free Wi-Fi speeds and the U.S. scored the top four spots. San Francisco International Airport earned first place with a median download speed of 176.25 megabits-per-second (Mbps), followed closely by Seattle-Tacoma International Airport with 171.01 Mbps. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport earned the bronze with 113.64 Mbps. Chicago O’Hare International Airport reached 85.49 Mbps.
