Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third in the franchise, but when is actually set? The timeline revealed within the narrative creates a plot hole in the overall series of events, which begins in 1926 and, if the final two films in the five-film franchise are produced, will end in 1945 with Gellert Grindelwald’s fall from power.
In Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jacob Kowalski is roped back into helping Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore, to which he agrees primarily because he wants to help Queenie Goldstein after she leaves to join Grindelwald at the end of the second film. When Kowalski and Newt meet up again, however, the former says it’s been one year since he met Newt in 1926, seemingly revealing Fantastic Beasts 3 is set at some point in 1927. Only the first two films have a time gap of a few months. The rest of the films in the franchise are supposed to be set years apart, especially considering the amount of time they span and the rise of Grindelwald’s power before he is finally defeated for good.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is supposed to be set in 1932, which means it’s actually been six years since the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald, which took place at the tail end of 1932. This discrepancy leaves a large gap in the timeline of the franchise, which is supposed to be in chronological order. Unlike the Harry Potter franchise, however, the Fantastic Beasts films aren’t meant to take place a year apart.
