Kate Bush may have been running up that hill all summer, but there's a new tune in town: The US Space Force this week released its official service song—and it's a banger.
Named after the USSF motto, "Semper Supra" (Latin for "Always Above") was created to "capture the esprit de corps of both current and future Guardians, and intends to bring together service members by giving them a sense of pride," according to the agency(Opens in a new window).
The sixth and youngest branch of the US Armed Forces, Space Force was established in 2019 by then-President Donald Trump to "organize, train, and equip military space forces … to ensure unfettered access to, and freedom to operate in space, and to provide vital capabilities to joint and coalition forces in peacetime and across the spectrum of conflict."
Since its establishment, the division has been mercilessly mocked—first for its camouflage uniforms(Opens in a new window), then for its near-exact replica(Opens in a new window) of Star Trek's Starfleet Command logo, and, undoubtedly, now for its military anthem.
Former US Air Force band member James Teachenor worked with Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond and US Coast Guard Band trombonist and arranger Sean Nelson on the piece, which "took years of research and revisions" before its unveiling during Tuesday's 2022 Air, Space and Cyber Conference.
"The song was a long work in progress because I wanted it to encompass all the capabilities that the Space Force offers and its vision," singer/songwriter Teachenor—the "visionary composer and driving force of the song's creation"—said in a statement. He wrote the lyrics and melody, while Nelson added harmony and orchestration.
