Radio stations in Ukraine were hacked on Thursday to broadcast fake news about the country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky ending up in critical condition.
The hack targeted TAVR Media, which manages several leading radio stations in Ukraine. It remains unclear how the culprits pulled off the intrusion. But the fake news broadcast told(Opens in a new window) listeners that Zelensky was in intensive care and that the chairman of the country’s parliament had taken over his duties.
TAVR Media has since told(Opens in a new window) the Ukrainian public that the broadcast was the result of a “cyberattack” on the company’s servers and network.
“At the moment, the relevant services are working to solve this problem,” the company added. “We emphasize that no information about the health problems of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is true.
Ukrainian authorities have also confirmed(Opens in a new window) the hack took place. In addition, Zelensky himself posted(Opens in a new window) a video on Instagram, where he showed he was still in good health.
Although it remains unclear who was behind the hack, suspicion is already falling on Russia, which continues to be locked in a war with the country. On Tuesday, Ukraine’s intelligence service reported(Opens in a new window) that the number of Russian-sponsored cyber attacks on the country’s IT and critical infrastructure systems has recently tripled.
“90% of attacks are carried out by military hackers of the Russian Federation and Belarus, whose activities are financed by the authorities,” the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine said.
