Ubisoft Shutting Down Several Online Services For Older Games

Gaming servers and services shutting down isn't uncommon in the industry. Certain systems become obsolete, and people will either need to transition to the newest or latest technology in order to keep up-to-date. This year saw the closure of the Internet Explorer browser, along with a number of other services. Ubisoft will be following suit, shutting down several online services for some of its older games.

Ubisoft has been in the industry ever since 1986, with the jump to the seventh generation of consoles in 2007 seeing the French company establishing its own major IPs like Assassin's Creed. It managed to spawn several sequels and spin-offs to form the open-world mega franchise that many know today. With the PS3 and Xbox 360 now no longer being supported, many games that were released on those consoles will be shutting down its online services.

This closure of the online services will mean that players will no longer be able to play multiplayer, link Ubisoft accounts in-game, or use other online features. In addition to this, players will no longer be able to access or install DLC if the game had any released in its lifetime. If a game that had a campaign mode required an online connection, such as Ghost Recon Future Soldier, the console needs to be put into offline mode in order to play.

This shutdown of services will only be affecting the original releases, so games that had remasters such as Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed 3 will not be affected by this closure. According to the blog post, this shut down was in order to help focus the company's resources on some of Ubisoft's newer or more popular titles. All of these services will be closed on September 1,
