Ubisoft’s is holding a cross-play test for its free-to-play FPS XDefiant this week
Ubisoft has announced details of the first cross-play test for its upcoming free-to-play FPS XDefiant.
Having held several ‘Insider Sessions’ for PC players last year, the latest playtest will see PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC users playing together from February 16-20.
Participants will be able to sample four game modes and 13 maps, including a new battleground called Pueblito, which is set in the fictional Caribbean nation of Yara introduced in Far Cry 6.
“XDefiant is a free-to-play, fast-paced arena shooter that combines intense gunplay with personalized loadouts and specialized factions, as teams of gunfighters battle for domination,” according to Ubisoft.
The game was initially revealed in July 2021 as Tom Clancy’s XDefiant. At the time, it only included factions from Tom Clancy franchises Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and The Division.
But in March 2022, Ubisoft announced that it was dropping the Tom Clancy branding and introducing additional factions from its wider catalogue of IP.
XDefiant is in development at Ubisoft San Francisco and led by executive producer Mark Rubin, who previously held the same position at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward.
It will be released for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Luna, with full cross-play expected at launch.
Ubisoft announced in January that it had cancelled three unannounced games and was planning to strengthen its focus on its biggest brands and live services following weaker than expected software sales over the holiday season.
Shortly after, it confirmed that it had cancelled a PvP battle arena game publicly referred to as ‘Project Q’.
