Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 certainly caught the eye when it was first revealed a couple of months back. It's a 'realistic' looking turn-based RPG from French developer Sandfall Interactive, which follows a group of explorers as they delve into otherworldly locations.
Conceptually unique and quite beautiful to behold in terms of visuals, the game continues to impress in this latest gameplay trailer. It's around seven minutes of edited footage, showcasing environmental traversal, combat, and a big old boss fight. The latter has some really nice music, too.
Again, battles are turn-based, but there's an emphasis on button prompts. Get your timing right and you'll seemingly do more damage, or force additional effects. Guarding against and parrying incoming blows appears to be crucial as well.
33's a magic number
We should be seeing much more of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 over the coming months, as we approach its 2025 release window. But until then, let us know if this is an expedition you'll be joining in the comments section below.
Robert (or Rob if you're lazy) is an assistant editor of Push Square, and has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he's played 'em all. A little too much, some might say.
Damn boiii. That look good!
Kind of made me think of Returnal meets FF
Absolutely fantastic, my wallet is ready for this game. Back then this sort of turn based gameplay is used in trailer as a concept gameplay (refer to the old FF13 trailer). Can't believe we have come this far to see it as an actual in game gameplay. RPG fans is eating hard for the next year or so.
This game looks really, really, really good. I think the art is a little bit bland, but the gameplay looks awesome.
Will be following this one closely.
I'm really into this.
