Tom Cruise’s long-awaited return as Maverick has proven to be an unexpected and industry-reviving triumph at the box office. This week the blockbuster indeed became Cruise’s biggest movie ever as it soared past $800 million in worldwide grosses.
The appeal of Cruise as a movie star of course is one reason Top Gun: Maverick has been such a massive hit. But certainly another big reason is the movie’s action, as captured by director Kosinski and his crew. Rather than employ the same kind of CGI seen in most modern-day blockbusters, Kosinski and Cruise elected to go truly old school on Maverick, doing as much as possible with real actors flying in real planes. Obviously this approach made life a lot more difficult, particularly for the actors, who had to endure massive G forces and even jet fuel in their blood in order to make the movie come to life. Audiences certainly appreciated all that hard effort, as those stratospheric Top Gun: Maverick box office numbers clearly indicate.
