Released more than 35 years after the original Top Gun, Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick sees the return of Cruise's hotshot pilot, Pete «Maverick» Mitchell. The new film puts Maverick in a leadership role this time around, with the Naval aviator tasked with training a new batch of Top Gun recruits for a dangerous mission in enemy territory. Top Gun: Maverick has fared well with audiences and critics, with particular praise levied at the film's thrilling sequences of aerial combat.
Several weeks ago, Top Gun: Maverick became the highest-grossing film of Cruise's career, beating the likes of Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Yesterday, it was announced that Top Gun: Maverick officially crossed $1 billion at the box office, making it only the second movie to do so since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The film has benefited from very positive word-of-mouth, which is reflected in the film's stellar 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick brings back Val Kilmer, also introducing characters played by Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Lewis Pullman, among others.
