Actor Tom Cruise is being shot off a rocket into space for a movie, and new details about the highly anticipated out-of-this-world project have now come to light.
Universal Pictures boss Donna Langley told the BBC that the movie takes place on Earth, that is, until Cruise needs to «go up to space to save the day.» Cruise's character is described as a «down-on-his-luck guy» who happens to be the only one who can save humanity.
Not only will Cruise fly into space for the untitled film and shoot scenes aboard the International Space Station, but the hope is for the actor to actually perform a spacewalk. If it comes to be, Cruise would become the first civilian in history to perform a spacewalk outside the ISS.
Should all go to plan, Cruise will fly to the ISS on a SpaceX rocketship in partnership with NASA. If it all comes together, it will be the first narrative feature to be shot in space.
According to Variety, the untitled movie has a production budget of $200 million, with Cruise earning a payday in the range of $30 million-$60 million for the project.
Doug Liman, who previously directed Cruise in American Made and Edge of Tomorrow, is lined up direct the Tom Cruise space movie. Cruise's latest movie was Top Gun: Maverick, which is 2022's highest-grossing movie by far. Cruise is said to have earned a $100 million payday for the film thanks to its huge success.
