Your Character Background is a cheeky description of your character's life before Tina's campaign started. It will have a moderate impact on your stats going forward,so choosing the right one will help you wake up on the right side of the bed into your new life.
During character creation, and each time that you level up, you'll be given Hero Points to improve 6 basic stats that affect certain aspects of your gaming experience:
Based on which Character Background you choose, your Fatemaker will start off with an advantage or disadvantage in particular stats.

Since you'll get more and more Hero Points over the course of the game, you'll get plenty of opportunities to shore up your weak stats. If you chose the 'Village Idiot' Character Background and consequently have low Intelligence, you can invest Hero Points into Intelligence later. However, doing this does mean that you'll miss the opportunity to put extra points into the stats you actually need, and you'll be behind another player who picked a more appropriate character background for their playstyle.
