An Olympia Investigation: Psychic Or Charlatan?
Saffron City’s Sabrina may be the first that comes to mind when you think about psychic gym leaders, but there’s another well-known mystic in the Pokemon universe. Anistar City’s Olympia from Pokemon X & Y is a self-proclaimed clairvoyant and empath who supposedly has the power to see the past and future of any person of Pokemon she comes into contact with. If you’re picking up on some doubt in my description, there’s a good reason for that. After careful examination of Olympia’s feats, I’m not entirely convinced she is who she says she is. There’s reasonable explanations for a lot of Olympia’s predictions. We needn’t rely on supernatural forces to understand how Olympia does what she does, despite what she’d like us to believe.
Olympia is the Kalos region’s Psychic-type gym leader and holds the rank of Marchioness in the Battle Chateau. She wears metal rings around her wrists and a giant cape emblazoned with a star-covered galaxy pattern. Olympia speaks exclusively in haikus, which should be your first clue that something isn’t quite right here. Dressing extravagantly is one thing, but adopting the persona of a mystic by talking like a fortune cookie is pretty sus. If she was really supernatural, would she need to try this hard to look like one? Even her name, which refers to Olympus and the power of the gods, is pretty heavy-handed. It may not be evidence, but it’s definitely a red flag.
