Two new Avatar: The Last Airbender animated movies have been announced, expanding the franchise's universe even further. Debuting on Nickelodeon in 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender launched what is now a hugely popular piece of IP. After the first animated series ended in 2008, fans waited until 2012 to see the Avatar franchise expand with The Legend of Korra. It has been eight years since the sequel show concluded, though, and since audiences received a new piece of animated Avatar content. However, the show's boom in popularity after it came to Netflix during the pandemic set plans into into motion to change this.
It was announced in 2021 that Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino were returning to oversee the franchise's expansion after departing Netflix's live-action adaptation. They were put in charge of Avatar Studios, a division of Nickelodeon Animation, and tasked with creating original content set in the universe. This came with the news that they were also developing an animated Avatar: The Last Airbender movie that will release in theaters. Now, it has been revealed that this will be the first of three new movies.

As shared by Deadline, Paramount and Nickelodeon have announced plans for three animated Avatar movies. The first will be directed by Lauren Montgomery, who worked on the original animated series as a storyboard artist and has since directed Voltron: Legendary Defender and Young Justice. The two new movies do not have directors officially attached. There are no story or character details available for any of the upcoming Avatar animated movies.
