While battling Marvel Comics’ version of Superman, Thorhad to use his weirdest superpower to defeat him. Hyperion is a member of the Squadron Supreme, a lesser-known superhero team within the Marvel Universe that is basically Marvel’s answer to DC Comics’ Justice League. Hyperion has nearly all of the same powers as Superman, but his abilities come from atomic energy. Forced to tap into Asgardian powers, Thor is able to use Hyperion’s origins against him, sort of, and defeat Marvel’s Superman in the weirdest way.
In Avengers#70 by Roy Thomas and Sal Buscema, the Squadron Supreme has been corrupted by the Grand Master into the Squadron Sinister. The Squadron Sinister challenges the Avengers in this issue, with Hyperion taking on Thor one-on-one. While Hyperion has Thor on the ropes during the first half of the fight, Thor unleashes a truly weird power to vanquish his Superman-like foe.

As a last ditch effort to defeat Hyperion after Marvel’s Superman proved his immense strength and impressive fighting ability, Thor called upon Odin to grant Mjölnir the power it needed to take down Hyperion. Imbued with Asgardian magic, Mjölnir was hurled at Hyperion and quickly spun around Marvel’s Superman. In doing so, Mjölnir shrank Hyperion and trapped him in a glass ball. The issue explained that the magic Thor used reversed the atomic process that gave Hyperion his powers, depowering him and shrinking him in size. While that may have been what technically happened to Hyperion, the magic Thor used gave him the ability to beat Marvel’s Superman however he needed to be beaten.
