There are no plans for a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the hit anime tie-in from Studio Trigger, did much to bring the hype back for Cyberpunk 2077. So much so that a huge amount of players have come back to the game. With such success, you may have expected Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to score a season two. However, that doesn’t look like it’s in the cards.

In an interview with Famitsu, producer Satoru Honma spoke about the success of the anime. The interview itself is extremely in-depth and touches on plenty of points regarding the anime’s production and reception. And, thanks to a translation from VGC, Honma points out that “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work,” and the team isn’t currently working on a season 2.

This doesn’t mean that other anime projects set in the Cyberpunk universe can’t happen. If another anime is produced, it’s likely to follow an entirely new storyline set in Night City. Honma also says that he “personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future,” so another series could happen in the future. However, it isn’t likely to be another Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season.

By its own merit, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has earned praise across the board. Studio Trigger’s iconic style combined with CD Projekt Red’s design of Night City seems to have created something special. And if part of the plan was to have the anime draw players back, it clearly worked. It created a new-found love for Cyberpunk 2077 that the game struggled to garner on its own. It’s certainly provided a better headspace for everyone involved as the developer works on a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.

Of course, it’s disappointing that we won’t see the storyline of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners continued in a season two. But
