This article contains spoilers for The Time Traveler's Wife episode 6.
The Time Traveler's Wife ends with a post-credits scene that will set up season 2's arc. Viewers had initially believed HBO's The Time Traveler's Wife was a limited series, expected to run for a single season. But the TV show, based on Audrey Niffenegger's best-selling debut novel, took audiences by surprise because of its slow pace. Key supporting characters weren't even introduced until episode 4, and The Time Traveler's Wifeseason 2 seems inevitable.
That naturally meant a large part of The Time Traveler's Wife episode 6 felt like setup, but writer and producer Steven Moffat demonstrated that such setup is remarkably easy to accomplish when time travel lies at the heart of your show. The 28-year-old Henry time jumped forward to get a glimpse of his marriage to Clare, and he was shocked to realize their time together was tinged with tragedy. He would find himself unable to give Clare the one thing she longed for most of all: a child. This is because time travel is a dominant gene and any fetus jumped straight out of the womb. Tired of seeing Clare suffer, his 37-year-old self has had a vasectomy. Meanwhile, in a smart inversion, this future Henry is the one who wound up there on the wedding day. The two narratives were tied together by a wedding video. Many of Moffat's best ideas are lifted from Doctor Who, and this one feels as though it's inspired by the episode «Blink.»
