AMC’s plan for Rick and Michonne’s return creates some big concerns for their Walking Dead spinoff. Years after announcing that Andrew Lincoln would reprise his role as Rick Grimes in a trilogy of movies, AMC confirmed that Rick will actually be back on the small screen instead. The next chapter in Rick’s Walking Dead story will arrive in the form of a miniseries.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, AMC provided some insight into what the future of The Walking Dead looks like. Adding to the list of spinoffs it already has in development is an untitled series that will continue season 9 and season 10’s setup. Six years after Rick’s “death”, Danai Gurira’s Michonne made the shocking discovery that he somehow survived the explosion on the bridge. By using Rick as the reason for Michonne’s Walking Dead exit, the show triggered assumptions that she’d be a part of the Rick Grimes movies. Now, AMC has finally painted a picture of what the franchise has in store for the two characters. A six-episode spinoff set to release on AMC and AMC+ will see Rick and Michonne’s reunion take center stage.

According to AMC, the spinoff’s story will be an “epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world”. The rest of the description related mostly to the strength of Rick and Michonne's relationship and their determination to find each other. While it’s good that The Walking Dead hasn’t abandoned the Rick-Michonne romance, it’s worth wondering if the spinoff is telling the wrong story for the show.
