The Righteous Gemstones season 2, episode 5 «Interlude II» set up many important plot points for the future of the Gemstone family — most importantly that Eli Gemstone, a wealthy megachurch pastor, might have killed someone and then stolen $3 million dollars. «Interlude II,» much like season one, episode 5 «Interlude,» takes place before the rest of the show, meaning that it sheds light on some parts of the characters' pasts while leaving other parts cloaked in mystery. The Righteous Gemstones is full of characters committing despicable actions, but if Eli truly did what the show is hinting at, this one might take the avaricious cake.
The Righteous Gemstones follows the hedonistic Gemstone family, made up of father Eli and children Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin, as they attempt to keep their family and their ministry together. Many consider The Righteous Gemstone's two «Interlude» episodes to be the show's best, as they take place in the past, providing greater character development and context for the rest of the series. The most recent episode «Interlude II» follows Eli Gemstone in 1993 as he attempts to get funding to expand the Gemstone Salvation Center and confronts a shady figure from his past, Glendon Marsh Sr. Marsh, Eli's former wrestling manager and criminal organizer, offers Eli one million dollars in cash if he will launder $3 million through his church. After reluctantly rejecting the offer, an armed and angry Marsh shows up to the Gemstone compound on Christmas night to confront Eli, having taken his accountant Martin hostage.
