The Office's B.J. Novak recalls falling for co-star Mindy Kaling's odd prank. Novak starred as Ryan Howard, the business-oriented former temp who found himself in an on-again-off-again relationship with Dunder Mifflin's customer service representative Kelly Kapoor (Kaling). Although Ryan and Kelly's relationship took a back seat to couples like Jim and Pam, Michael and Holly, and Dwight and Angela, the pair's shaky yet passionate years-long courtship was a staple of The Office. When together, Ryan would tend to play apathetic and would prefer a more casual relationship with Kelly who instead wanted something more serious. This culminated in the final episode of the series when the two finally ran away together.
In addition to starring as Kelly and Ryan in The Office, Novak and Kaling were involved behind-the-scenes. Both wrote, directed, and executive produced several episodes throughout the show's run. They've gone on to collaborate on other projects as well, with Novak appearing as a guest star and directing episodes of Kaling's sitcom The Mindy Project. Additionally, Kaling and Novak's real-life friendship over the years is well-documented.
