Nia DaCosta, director of The Marvels, is set to helm the adaptation of The Water Dancer. DaCosta's first film, 2018's Little Woods, starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James, garnered attention for the director, leading to her being tapped to helm the Jordan Peele-produced remake of Candyman. Following the success of Candyman, DaCosta was hired to direct the sequel to the MCU's Captain Marvel, The Marvels, which will see star Brie Larson return to her hero role along with various other new and returning characters. With The Marvels said to be in post-production, DaCosta already has her next job lined up.
As reported by THR, DaCosta will direct the adaptation of the New York Times best-selling novel, The Water Dancer. The Water Dancer is the debut novel of writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. The Water Dancer follows Hiram Walker, a young man born into slavery. After almost drowning, Hiram discovers a unique ability he was previously unaware of, which begins his struggle to understand his gift as he tries to escape.

DaCosta also looks to be keeping busy, as she is attached as a producer and director of another project, The Lincoln Conspiracy, a TV series about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. With The Marvels due out next year and The Water Dancer lined up, DaCosta looks to be expanding her resume with exciting and unique projects.
