As important as the Losers' Club is to Stephen King's IT, the HBO Max prequel series Welcome to Derry should avoid creating a new one. Nearly five years removed from the monster success of IT's 2017 theatrical release, it can be easy to forget just how big a hit it was. IT still stands as the highest-grossing horror movie ever, banking over $700 million worldwide. While 2019's IT Chapter Two wasn't received as well, it still earned well over $400 million. With that in mind, it's no wonder that Warner Bros. has decided to head back to the IT well.
Unsurprisingly, the announcement that HBO Max is making an IT prequel didn't come along with any real plot details. All that's known about the potential series so far is that it's set in the 1960s, prior to the Losers' Club's 1980's childhood battle with Pennywise in IT 2017. The prequel will also reportedly allow viewers to see IT's origin story told for the first time onscreen, after only teases of it were given in the movies.

At this point, it's unclear whether Bill Skarsgard will return to play Pennywise, but it seems likely that Warner Bros. will try hard to convince him to come back. While Pennywise remains an essential element of anyIT prequel, one thing that executive producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti would be wise to avoid doing is creating a new Losers' Club-style group for the monster to fight. Welcome to Derry offers a real opportunity to do something new with the property, and simply rehashing that plot would be a mistake.
