I can’t describe how great it is that Vanillaware is back. Their absence was felt, and nearly every year since the release of Dragon’s Crown, I kept “checking in” on them to see what they had up their sleeve. Once 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was announced I was floored, but by the time it arrived in late 2020, I was incredibly busy and didn’t have time to check it out. The Aegis Rim Switch launch changed that.
This new launch trailer does a damn fine job of showing people what it’s about, with plenty of Vanillaware flair to boot. The music is great, the aesthetics are beautiful, and the promise of mechs and wise-cracking protagonists keeps the energy high. You also get to see quite a few different systems in action. There’s plenty of story to partake in, on top of some action with big numbers popping up all over the screen. Now is a pretty good time to dive in, too, as I haven’t seen that many widespread discussions in terms of spoilers: despite it being over a year old at this point.
It’s a long time coming, but with the Aegis Rim Switch launch, I’m finally in the headspace to check this out, and cross it off my list to ensure that I’ve played every Vanillaware game to date. Given the success of the game so far even without the Switch version to account for, I hope this means we’ll see plenty more from the studio in the years to come.
