Taking to Twitter, Elon Musk, in a series of tweets expressed his fear over the global trends of reducing birth rates and falling population on Earth.. “We should be much more worried about population collapse,” he said in the tweet. Musk’s tweet appears after growing trends of people deciding to not have children being reported widely. The change in people’s mindset, of not having children, is largely attributed to inequalities, financial cost of having a child, global political instabilities, pandemic and climate change. Pointing out these trends, Musk said, “If there aren’t enough people for Earth, then there definitely won’t be enough for Mars.” The billionaire CEO has spoken about his dream of wanting to build a multi-planetary civilization multiple times in the past. With these reports coming in, Musk fears his dreams may never come true as we might be heading towards a population collapse.
In a series of tweets, Elon Musk called out the 2019 UN projections that estimated that the population of the world will see an increase of 2 billion in the next 30 years. UN’s World Population Prospects 2019 reported that Earth’s population would peak at 11 billion by the end of this century. The Tesla CEO has vehemently disagreed with this projection in his series of tweets on population collapse.
“UN projections are utter nonsense. Just multiply last year’s births by life expectancy. Given downward trend in birth rate, that is best case unless reversed,” his tweet read.
