CBS released a sneak peek of Survivor 42, where Jeff Probst reveals what fans should expect from the season and how it compares to Survivor season 41. Survivor has always been just as much about how well the castaways perform in challenges, as it is about how they survive in extreme living conditions and are forced to build alliances to stay in the game. Many fans were disappointed with Survivor 41, and were hoping that changes would be made before the next season. Some of the complaints were that the winner of the season was not shown often enough, leading to her winning coming as a shock for many fans. Most fans agree that adding all of the twists and advantages have actually hurt the show because it puts less focus on the cast, which has always been one of the most compelling parts of Survivor.

Jeff Probst broke the fourth wall, as he has done since Survivor 41, to let fans in on the changes being made to this season. He said that this season was filmed back to back fromSurvivor 41, so this cast has never seen any of the new advantages and will be experiencing it all for the first time. Like last season, Survivor 42, will have almost no food given to the cast and penalties, like losing their flint, if they do not win a challenge. The last similarity between the two comes from the twists where members of each tribe have to say a weird phrase before the challenge starts to activate an immunity idol.
