The Day Before, the most anticipated game in the world on Steam, is being made by part-time unpaid volunteers. Even the paid staff are labelled as volunteers due to developer Fntastic's "culture is based on the idea of volunteering." Sounds similarly fishy to when a company describes its employees as one big family.
Fntastic's volunteering ideology was spotted by News.com.au. There are currently no openings for full-time volunteers listed on Fntastic's website. However, the studio's website claims, "Anyone can be a part-time volunteer to contribute to the Fntastic community," you just need to get in touch.

So what do part-time volunteers actually get for contributing to what is supposedly a triple-A game? Well, for completing "various activities ranging from translating to community moderating," and offering "unique skills to improve our projects or create new special features," part-time volunteers will be given "cool rewards, participation certificates, and free codes."
It isn't a good sign that a game with triple-A scope, developers who have already released several games, and a publisher is relying on unpaid volunteers to do critical roles such as translating and community moderation. These are all jobs that should be done by paid workers.
The Day Before is an open world MMO zombie survival game. It was initially intended for a June 21, 2022 launch date, but the developer's decision to migrate the entire game to Unreal Engine 5 has pushed that back to March 1, 2023.
