One of the most popular gameplay elements of farming simulator Stardew Valley is the ability to find love with one of 12 bachelors and bachelorettes living in Pelican Town. Once Stardew Valley players have chosen a spouse, said spouse moves onto their farm, allowing for further home expansions and the ability to have children. Further content updates by creator Eric «ConcernedApe» Barone added new features and abilities to spouses — they can now water crops, cook food, and even decorate rooms in the home to suit their own preferences.
Marrying one of the 12 available bachelors is no easy process. Players must talk to them and bring them gifts until they have reached maximum friendship level, at which time they can present their intended with first a Bouquet to ask them out and later a Mermaid's Pendant as a proposal. The Mermaid's Pendant is a unique item that can only be purchased from a mysterious sailor who hangs out on the beach on rainy days. Later, if players are dissatisfied with their choice of spouse, they can choose to divorce them and remarry. If they want a completely fresh start, a player can even pay the evil Witch to turn their children into doves and leave them single and unattached once again.

However, most Stardew Valley players choose instead to commit to a single spouse.
