A new novel reveals that Darth Maul may have been involved in (or at least present during) the events of . takes place during the period between ' prequel trilogy and its original trilogy, in the time after Order 66 caused the death of most Jedi throughout the galaxy. By itself, it's a pretty insular, standalone story, but the complications of the timeline mean it intersects with many other characters' storylines, even if they don't always appear on screen.
Darth Maul wouldn't normally be associated with and its sequel . But despite evidence to the contrary in, Maul is alive and well during that time. While Maul's life after has already been well explored in comics, novels, and animated series, his own timeline is somewhat confused, and clear answers on his activities at a particular time aren't always available. However, a newly released novel suggests that Maul may have been around for the events of, and that Cal Kestis was in more danger than he even realized.

Johnston's novel confirms that Darth Maul had a base of operations on Dathomir during the events of., which hit shelves on October 10, 2023, tells the origin story of Qi'ra, a crime lord who debuted in the 2018 film. During, set in 10 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin, or the destruction of the Death Star at the end of ), it's revealed that Maul has a hand in several of the galaxy's biggest and most powerful crime syndicates. Qi'ra runs off to join him near the end of that film.
