The horror-comedy series Shining Vale uses a lot of references to The Shining, and the latest easter eggs might give away the season 1 ending. From its opening scenes, Shining Vale has included multiple references and easter eggs to both the original The Shining novel by Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 1980 film adaptation. The Shining has become such a part of our cultural awareness that even viewers who have never read the book or seen the movie are likely to spot some references and might recognize certain themes recurring.
In The Shining, Jack Torrance and his family are taking care of the isolated Overlook Hotel during its off-season but are haunted by the ghosts of past guests. The evil that exists inside the Overlook Hotel manipulates Jack Torrance in part through the spirit of Grady and turns him against his family, driving him to try and kill them. In Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining, Jack Torrance attempts to kill his family with an axe, but is outwitted and freezes to death in the hedge maze without being redeemed. However, in Stephen King’s original ending to The Shining¸ Jack uses a roque mallet and, when reminded of his identity by Danny, turns the mallet on himself, saving his family from both himself and the Overlook Hotel.
