Speculation about Shenmue 4 has begun swirling in the wake of cryptic social media posts from publisher 110 Industries. Since Shenmue 3 teased the continuation of Ryo's story, fans of the classic series remain hopeful that a fourth mainline entry will eventually see the light of day. But given that nearly two decades passed between the franchise's second and third games, the road to another installment won't likely prove an easy one to navigate.
Series creator Yu Suzuki announced the long-awaited Shenmue 3 during Sony's E3 2015 press conference. Many will recall the reveal was accompanied by details about a Kickstarter campaign for the game's production, which eventually raised well over $7 million in funding from thousands upon thousands of backers. Other companies, such as Sony and publisher Deep Silver, pitched in as well, ensuring the title made it to market as intended. However, Shenmue 3 launched to mixed reception in 2019, once more raising questions about the brand's future, particularly with regards to the story arc for protagonist Ryo Hazuki. But maybe all hope isn't lost just yet.

110 Industries, the publisher behind Wanted: Dead, hosted a Tokyo Game Show 2021 presentation that featured a guest appearance by Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki. While the legendary developer seemingly bears no previous connections to the company, few batted an eye at the TGS collaboration.
