Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s post-credits scene revealed Shadow the Hedgehog is part of the film franchise, and his powers and origins from the games require some explanation. Additionally, there are also hypotheses about what his role in future installments of the franchise will be. There isn’t a lot to go on with just Shadow’s brief cameo, but taking his appearances in other media into account can provide a good idea of what the movies have in store.
Sonic the Hedgehog has garnered a massive cast of characters over the past 30 years through games, comics, cartoons, and, naturally, movies, and one of the most prominent of those characters is Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow was first introduced in Sonic Adventure 2, and since then, he’s become Sonic’s most notable rival and foil in the franchise. The Sonic the Hedgehog movies haven’t been straightforward adaptations of the games or other Sonic media, so various aspects of Shadow’s character will likely be changed. However, the post-credits scene to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 suggests that at least his backstory will cover the same major beats, so that still adds merit to detailing his history.
