Scarface: The World is Yours was released during the aftermath of Grand Theft Auto's newfound success and, like many other GTA clones of the time, heavily borrowed from its gameplay. Despite this, the movie Scarface was the inspiration for one of GTA’s best entries, Vice City.
Of the many games released in 2001, Grand Theft Auto 3 offered revolutionary open-world gameplay and solid mechanics that continue to set standards in the industry today. The game garnered a fair share of profits, driving many to develop similar open-world crime titles. Scarface: The World is Yours was Radical Entertainment's attempt to replicate the success of GTA while also creating a game worthy of the iconic crime lord. The game altered aspects of the source material, including the addition of a different ending from the Scarface movie, which offered fans a new way to experience the story.

As reported by TheGamer, a content trailer of the canceled Scarface sequel called Scarface: Empire, was leaked by the YouTube channel Mafia Game Videos. The trailer showcases info about the ill-fated sequel, including gameplay features, plot, and concept art. Former Scarface developer Narlak revealed the following to Mafia Game Videos about Empire's plot: "The idea was Tony was forced out of Miami during the crackdown on drugs in that area/time period and decided Vegas was a good place to move his empire".
