Google is axing one aspect of its reminders and Google Assistant toolset: the option to set location-based reminders.
As Ars Technica reports(Opens in a new window), a Google Assistant help page(Opens in a new window) on setting and managing reminders now says: "Important: The option to create reminders for a certain location is going away soon. You can still create reminders at a certain time and set routines for a location."
One Reddit user reported(Opens in a new window) that Google Assistant notified them that the feature was going away just after they set a location-based reminder. We repeated the process and received the same notification, with Google Assistant setting the reminder and saying, “And just so you know, soon you’ll no longer be able to set reminders at locations.”
Google hasn’t shared a specific date when it will actually stop offering the feature or if it has a proper replacement on deck. For now, it simply suggests setting location-based routines, which may not be as useful for one-off reminders.
Many comments on the Reddit thread and on Ars Technica’s report suggest that the location-based reminders weren’t as useful as they might at first sound, as they often would fail to properly notify users.
Users on Samsung phones will still have the option of setting location-based reminders through Samsung’s built-in Reminders tool and via Bixby; iPhone users can do the same with Siri. Google may also have a replacement option coming up with the in-development Assistant Memory tool uncovered by 9to5Google(Opens in a new window).
