Despite being labeled a quiet year by quite a few people, 2021 still threw up a number of games we will be talking about for years to come. It Takes Two, Returnal, and Guardians Of The Galaxy, just to name a few. PlayStation also hit us with a handful of exclusives, the most notable being Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. An ambitious project for a number of reasons, incluing it being a PS5 exclusive when the console was still extremely hard to come by.
Despite next-gen console scarcity, Rift Apart was a hit. One of the best parts about the sequel was the introduction of Rivet, a female lombax from another dimension. Ratchet fans spent the months prior to Rift Apart's launch trying to guess Rivet's name, simply referring to her as Girl Ratchet for a while. Turns out those calling her that weren't far off what her name once was before the Insomniac team landed on Rivet.

Insomniac's Mark Stuart revealed during an extensive GDC talk (via IGN) about Rift Apart that the first name Rivet had during development was Ratchette. Eventually deciding that seemed too much like Rivet was little more than a female Ratchet, they then switched Rivet's name to Ratchet. That's right, the new lombax almost had the exact same name as the game's protagonist. That quickly turned into a logistical nightmare, as you might imagine.
“At a time where story treatments were being rapidly iterated on, it was hard to tell what dimension you were in, but also which Ratchet you were talking about,” Stuart explained. As having two Ratchets became more and more confusing, the team decided to switch Rivet's name to Gadget. That stuck for a while, but some involved in making the decision
