Riverdale season 7 is now set to conclude the long-running show's tenure on The CW. The series, which premiered in 2017, is a gritty reboot of Archie Comics, following the suburban idyll of Riverdale being rocked by murder, crime, and corruption. The series stars KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, surrounded by an ensemble that includes Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller, Mädchen Amick as Betty's mother Alice Smith, Marisol Nichols as Veronica's mother Hermione Lodge, Mark Consuelos as her villainous father Hiram Lodge, and the late Luke Perry as Archie's father Fred.
Riverdale has astonished spellbound viewers with a series of shocking twists and lurid storylines over the course of its run, which is currently midway through season 6. The show's increasingly bizarre plotlines have gone from murder to cults to a drug called jingle jangle to a massive time jump, a six-episode arc that may be a hallucination, the arrival of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and several main characters developing superpowers. Although the core fans of the series have remained rapt at these increasingly ludicrous swerves, the show's viewership has been consistently dropping over the years. Season 2 peaked at 2.12 million average viewers, but by season 5 it had fallen to 1.01 million. The Riverdaleseason 6 premiere also experienced a brutal 45% drop from the premiere of season 5.
