Rextroy is given a tip about a mage ability doing some insane damage, and the game is afoot!
Today, we are going to figure out how to one shot A LOT of people with the mage spell Touch of the Magi! The whole investigation started with Ipanic sending me a picture he found of someone being one shot by a 215k Touch of the Magi. This seemed to be a little overkill so I decided to figure out how the one shot worked! Since Shadowlands, Touch of the Magi changed into a baseline ability, in earlier days it was bound to Arcane Blast. What this means, is that it should be way easier to find a way to store the damage with a low level NPC (since Arcane Blast used to kill them)! It still isn't as easy as it might seem, Arcane Blast won't store damage before the target dies, so we have to figure out a way to keep the target alive, or find an enemy that won't instantly be killed, for the debuff to have time to stack up. First success I had, was when I tested if Arcane Blast would even add any «scaled» damage against low level targets.
I tested this against the training dummies in Durotar that disappear a second after taking damage. This was enough time for the magi debuff to reach 250k damage! Now I just had to find some NPC similar to the dummies, that we could actually bring with us to the Horde.
Sadly all the possible NPCs were either leashed, or immune to the magi debuff. So I had to try a different strategy, and that was to keep the target alive, by giving it a massive absorb! I had a priest, mind control and give Ray of Hope to a random orc enemy.
