Electronic Arts is thinking of rebranding its FIFA football franchise to EA Sports FC.
That's according to VentureBeat, which reports that the publishing giant has decided that the $§ billion that football governing body FIFA wants to use its name is simply not worth it. As a result, EA apparently prefers EA Sports FC as an alternate brand.
Word that EA was thinking of rebranding FIFA broke in October 2021 with a press release from the GM of EA Sports Cam Weber.
"As we look ahead, we’re also exploring the idea of renaming our global EA Sports football games. This means we’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world," Weber wrote at the time
"The future of football is very big and very bright. Our priority is to ensure we have every opportunity to continue delivering the world’s greatest interactive football experiences. Thank you again for your support and feedback on this year’s game. We look forward to creating the future of football with you."
Around this time, Electronic Arts filed trademarks for EA Sports FC in both the UK and EU. It later emerged that the reason why EA was considering this option was that FIFA wanted twice as much money to license its name – which would clock in at around $1 billion every four years.
