A newly proposed EU law could force Apple to allow third party apps, which aren't on the App Store, to be downloaded onto its devices. This means that Fortnite could finally make its return to Apple devices. This proposed ruling was a part of the Digital Markets Act, and is actually pretty close to being made into an actual law.
The Verge received an email statement by European Commission spokesperson Johannes Bahrke saying, "We believe that the owner of a smartphone should have the freedom to choose how to use it. This freedom includes being able to opt for alternative sources of apps on your smartphone. With the DMA, a smartphone owner would still be able to enjoy safe and secure services of the default app store on their smart phones. On top of that, if a user so chooses, the DMA would allow a smartphone owner to also opt for other safe app stores.”

After over a year of going back and forth thanks to the Epic vs. Apple lawsuit, it seems that Apple users will soon be able to download any app they want without having to jailbreak their devices.
The Verge noted that Apple and Tim Cook have always been against the act of sideloading Apple devices as, according to them, it creates room for potential security risks. A report put out by Apple said, "Allowing sideloading would degrade the security of the iOS platform and expose users to serious security risks not only on third-party app stores, but also on the App Store.”
